Why do you want to Tweet?

Why are you using, or about to use Twitter?

If you are a beginner, before you dive in you should consider a few things.

Are you joining because you just want to talk about yourself, and what is important or interesting to you, or are you going to use Twitter to promote your business, or some other money making scheme?

If it’s purely for personal use, then go ahead, think up a screenname (but choose carefully, you’ll be stuck with it for a long time) and get registered. You can then tweet to your hearts’ content, about whatever crosses your mind!

If you have a business motive in mind however, I would recommend a little thinking time before you commit to your first tweet. It is tempting to sign up and dive straight in, but a little forward planning now can reap bigger rewards in the future.

Choosing your screenname

• Unless you have a reason for staying anonymous, use your real name, online brand name, blog or website name or whatever name you are known as.  People willbe able to search for you,  find you and identify you more easily. They will also be able to identify with you more if you are a name and a face, rather than a combination of numbers and underscores with a little brown box for a picture.
   
• It doesn’t matter if you use upper or lower case letters, you can type in either and still be found. Play around with combinations to make your name stand out, and thereby more memorable. You are creating a brand here, so put some thought into it.
   
• Avoid underscores – It may help break up words in your name, but many people twitter by mobile phone, and using underscores complicates the process. Think of a good name with no confusing characters.
